Dioxin is a class of highly toxic and persistent chemicals that are often formed by combusting certain materials. Open burning of domestic waste is one source of dioxin emissions. The Northeast state environmental agencies worked together to reduce this source of dioxin and other air pollutants by raising public awareness of the risks. NEWMOA and the Northeast States for Coordinated Air Use Management (NESCAUM) have worked to raise public awareness about the pollution and health risks associate with open burning of domestic waste from 2002-2006. To assist in these public outreach campaigns, the project partners developed the following public service announcements for print, radio, and television.
