Jose Arroyo - Baxter Healthcare - Aibonito

Jose Arroyo Rivera, Chemical Engineer, graduated from the University of Puerto Rico in Mayaguez, who worked for 5 years with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, as a Nuclear Power Inspector, 3 years in a local Pharmaceutical as an Operational Quality Supervisor and for the last 2 years has been Baxter Healthcare of PR in Aibonito's Radiation Safety Officer and Energy Manager. Jose is also the Backup for the Safety and Security Manager. His contribution for the implementation of projects at Baxter has been instrumental for the success of the Energy Program.

Sharon Austin - U.S. EPA Headquarters

Sharon Austin is a chemical engineer with the Economic, Exposure and Technology Division of EPA’s Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics. Before joining EPA in 1997, Ms. Austin spent over a decade in the pulp and paper industry in both operations and technical support roles. One of Sharon’s first assignments within EPA was the publication of the textbook, Green Engineering, Environmentally Conscious Design of Chemical Processes, by Drs. Allen & Shonnard, published by Prentice Hall in 2001. Ms. Austin was the US EPA editor for the textbook. The Green Engineering textbook, and accompanying modules, incorporates several of OPPT’s estimation models and tools. The Textbook is presently being revised with anticipated publication date in early 2011. Sharon also served as the Designated Federal Official on the National Environmental Justice Advisory Council (NEJAC) on Advancing Environmental Justice through Pollution Prevention, published in June, 2003. In 2003, Ms. Austin developed an extensive training methodology for ChemSTEER – Chemical Screening tool for Environmental Releases and Exposure for the manufacturing, process and use of new chemical substances - and to conduct training sessions at Sustainable Future Workshops. Since late 2007, Ms. Austin has worked with the pharmaceutical industry with a focus on the recovery and reuse of secondary hazardous materials, which has resulted in the development of a Decision Support Tool that enables facilities to assess environmental and economical benefits including GHG, Energy and cost savings. Ms. Austin received her B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Lamar University in 1983.

Joseph Bergstein - U.S. EPA Region 2

Joe Bergstein joined EPA Region 2 in 1991 as a technical reviewer of environmental information documents in the NEPA program (National Environmental Policy Act). Over the years, he has served as a project manager in EPA’s performance partnership agreement with the State of New Jersey and has worked in the Region’s Data Analysis Team and Strategic Planning Team before his assignment to Region 2’s Pollution Prevention (P2) Team. Joe’s responsibilities in the P2 team include grants management activities, chairmanship of the Pollution Prevention Council and technical outreach on a variety of topics including electronics management, energy efficiency and greening of the hospitality sector. Working with others at EPA, Joe recently developed a website entitled, “Pollution Prevention in the Hospitality Industry”. In addition to his presentation on energy efficiency performance and benchmarking for hotels, Joe will be at the poster session to provide information about Region 2's P2 program activities and an overview of the hospitality website.

Andy Bray - NEWMOA

Andy joined NEWMOA in 1997 as an intern before being made Project Staff later that year and Project Manager in 2000. He manages NEWMOA's P2Rx™ Center and the activities of the Center, including information and web resource development. Andy sits on the Executive Committee of the P2Rx™ National Network and has served as the National Coordinator for the Network. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the National Pollution Prevention Roundtable. In 2009 Andy took on principal responsibility for managing the National P2 Results Data System, including ongoing modifications to the System and connecting it with states' data systems. He oversees and manages the day-to-day information technology components of a number of other projects at NEWMOA, including the Mercury-added Products Database and the Beneficial Use Determinations Database. His current information and research interests are in the areas of materials policy and climate change mitigation and how Web 2.0 technologies can help to inform people about more sustainable practices. Andy holds Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering and a Masters Degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Concentration, both from the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Prior to joining NEWMOA, he worked at the Massachusetts Toxics Use Reduction Institute as a Graduate Student Research Assistant and Project Staff.

John Connolly - JFConnolly & Associates

John’s work in the area of organics diversion, complementary recycling strategies, and business-driven sustainability initiatives has delivered convincing operational, economic, environmental, and community relations results for all parties involved. These efforts have positioned John as an experienced resource for companies, industry organizations, and governmental agencies focused on diverting and recycling food waste in an operationally and economically viable fashion. Prior to forming JFConnolly & Associates in 2002, John Connolly acquired twenty-one years of retail operations experience in the supermarket sector with Hannaford Bros. Co., Portland, ME.

Daniel Cook - Conservation Solutions Corproation

Dan Cook has been in the energy and water efficiency business for over 30 years. He has been President of Conservation Solutions Corporation for the last 15 years. Conservation Solutions works with large commercial, industrial, multifamily and institutional building owners to help them reduce energy and water use and costs. Prior to Conservation Solutions Corporation Mr. Cook was Vice President of EnerPro Engineering, Senior Project Manager at XENERGY, President of Resource Management Group and Senior Technical Manager for American Energy Management. Mr. Cook is a graduate of New England College with a B. S. in Geology and completed graduate studies in HydroGeology at the University of Arizona. He is a member of the Association of Energy Engineers, Association of Facilities Engineers, ASHRAE and the U. S. Green Building Council.

Peter Cooke - Maine DEP

Peter Cooke has been the Maine Pollution Prevention Program Manager for 9 years and has developed certification programs for lodging businesses, restaurants and grocery stores. Peter also developed a metrics database to quantify the environmental benefits from participation in certification programs. Peter has extensive experience conducting social marketing initiatives, performing energy audits, and facilitating the implementation of environmental management systems for boat builders, colleges and universities, ski areas, medical labs, and composites manufacturers. He is ISO 14001 Lead Auditor certified and is Building Operator Certified (BOC). Peter holds a Masters of Science degree in Resource Management from Antioch University where he is also an adjunct faculty member teaching Materials and Energy Sustainability. Prior to being the Pollution Prevention Program Manager Peter was an Instructor for the Hurricane Island Outward Bound School.

Kathy Davey - U.S. EPA Headquarters

Kathy Davey is a senior Environmental Protection Specialist in the Pollution Prevention Division at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. She specializes in measurement and predictive tools and forging links across technical and networking efforts within the P2 Program, and between the P2 Program and other EPA programs. Kathy has 25 years of experience at EPA, a law degree, and lives in northern Virginia.

Carlos J. Fernandez - McConnell Valdes LLC

Mr. Fernández-Lugo represents clients before local and federal agencies with jurisdiction over environmental, energy and land use matters, such as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Environmental Quality Board, the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources, the Solid Waste Authority, the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority, the Energy Affairs Administration, the Puerto Rico Planning Board, the Regulations and Permits Administration, and the various autonomous municipalities throughout Puerto Rico. He also provides counseling to clients on green-field and brown-field development, land use issues, compliance with and interpretation of environmental laws and regulations, the environmental implications of business transactions, siting and permitting of energy facilities, and negotiation of energy contracts, among others. Mr. Fernández-Lugo frequently provides lectures to industry groups and associations on these and other topics. Prior to joining McConnell Valdés, Mr. Fernández-Lugo served as judicial law clerk to Hon. Erick J. Garcia - Pfizer - Carolina Site, Puerto Rico

Erick J. Garcia graduated from the University of Puerto Rico Mayaguez Campus with a degree in Industrial Biotechnology and Chemical Engineering. He has 10 years of experience in the area of quality control and chemistry laboratories management. He is currently QC Senior Supervisor for laboratories at Pfizer Carolina site. He has extensive knowledge in lean laboratories development, implementation, and sustainability.

Amanda Geldard - U.S. EPA Headquarters

Amanda Geldard has been a member of the Definition of Solid Waste rulemaking team in EPA’s Office of Resource Conservation and Recovery for over three years. Currently, her focus is on assisting states and EPA regions with implementation of the DSW final rule through the recently formed DSW Users Group. She is also involved in efforts to use biennial report data to find opportunities to increase hazardous waste recycling and is part of the analysis team at EPA Headquarters that is conducting a quality review of the 2009 Biennial Report data. Prior to coming to work for EPA five years ago, she spent a year working with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation forecasting daily ozone and particulate matter levels. She holds an MS in Environmental Science and Policy from Johns Hopkins University and a BS in Environmental Science from the State University of New York at Albany.

Terri Goldberg - NEWMOA

Terri joined NEWMOA in 1989 and has directed a wide range of pollution prevention, toxics reduction, solid and hazardous waste, and other projects for the Association. In particular, she has supervised all of NEWMOA's pollution prevention and toxics reduction activities for 20 years. She currently directs NEWMOA's mercury and other toxics reduction programs and activities, pollution prevention initiatives, solid waste projects, and the Climate-Waste Action Plan. She manages the NEWMOA staff and writes and oversees a number of grants and contracts. She has a Master of Science degree from the Harvard School of Public Health with a concentration on environmental health policy. She has an undergraduate degree from Hampshire College with a concentration in environmental science. Prior to joining NEWMOA, she was an Associate with the consulting firm, Industrial Economics, Inc. for several years, and prior to that, she spent a year at the U.S. EPA Region 1 working on lead reduction initiatives.

Michael Hastry - New Jersey DEP

Michael R. Hastry is the Chief of the Bureau of Hazardous Waste Compliance and Enforcement at the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP). He oversees New Jersey’s Hazardous Waste Compliance and Enforcement program including its regional offices. He has been with NJDEP since 1986 (24 yrs) and has worked in the Hazardous Waste (RCRA), Solid Waste, and Spills Programs. Mr. Hastry serves as the primary state contact for the USEPA Region 2 RCRA Program where he ensures compliance with the Performance Partnership Agreement and associated Grant requirements. He is a member of NEWMOA’s RCRA Hazardous Waste Training Committee and of NJDEP’s Regulatory Development and Environmental Stewardship Committees. The Environmental Stewardship Initiative is a recognition program for regulated entities. The goal of this initiative is to encourage regulated entities to improve their environmental performance beyond the minimum requirements of existing rules and regulations. The program is broad in scope and covers a diverse spectrum of environmental stewardship and sustainable related practices. The intent is to showcase the achievements of members of the regulated community and serve as an information resource to encourage others to follow. Mr. Hastry holds a B.S. in Environmental Science from Marist College, NY and is a Certified Public Manager from Rutgers University, NJ.

Reed P Hepperly - Hepperly Enterprises

Reed P. Hepperly is the owner of Hepperly Enterprises, the only mushroom-producing company in Puerto Rico and one of the leading compost companies in the west coast of the Island. Hepperly Enterprises recycles the “green waste” of the municipality of Mayagüez, the largest in the west coast. It also manages a recycling center that receives yard and organic waste from contractors, landscapers and industry in general. Hepperly Enterprises’ has been recognized by the Southern Sustainable Agriculture Research & Education (SARE) for its Research and Development efforts, which include the development of a compost-based germination mix to substitute commercial peat moss imports. Reed Hepperly also advises both private and government parties in how to implement effective in-house diversion of organic waste streams and develop finished products of wastes that are traditionally deposited in the landfills. Hepperly’s experience as a mushroom producer has positioned him as a reliable consultant on the use of fungi in bioremediation and other eco-friendly industrial applications.

Jeff Lebedin - AquaRecycle

Jeff Lebedin is the founder and President of AquaRecycle®, an environmentally focused manufacturing company specializing in recycling products for commercial laundries. Jeff’s background is financially focused, with an MBA from Georgia State University and CPA Certification in the State of Georgia. After a series of successful business ventures, he started AquaRecycle in 1998 and with a team of experts developed the most successful laundry water recycle system on the market today. The AquaRecycle Wash Water recycling system was patented in 2005. To date there are over 110 recycle systems throughout the world and over 2 billion gallons recycled. AquaRecycle has just introduced its newest product, ThermalRecycle, which takes dryer exhaust and reuses the heat. AquaRecycle is based in Marietta, GA.

Paul Lockwood - NH Department of Environmental Services

Paul Lockwood is the Supervisor of the Pollution Prevention Section within the NH Department of Environmental Service’s Planning, Prevention & Assistance Unit. Paul received a BS in biology in 1970 from Long Island University and graduated the Certified Public Manager program in 2005. Originally living in Connecticut, he managed Environmental Health programs for several local Health Departments. In 1988, he moved to New Hampshire where he worked as Senior Environmental Planner for CAQ Planning & Engineering, an environmental consulting firm. In 1991, Paul was hired by the Department of Environmental Services to organize and manage the New Hampshire Pollution Prevention Program (NHPPP) and in 1995, he was promoted to Supervisor of the Section that contains the NH Pollution Prevention and Household Hazardous Waste Programs.

Juan Lopez - Tropical Inns / Palmas de Lucia

Mr. Juan López Molina has been part of the tourism industry since 1994. He is the owner and the administrator of the First Chain of Paradores Tropical Inns Puerto Rico with his four properties: Parador Palmas de Lucía, Parador Costa del Mar, Parador Guánica 1929, and his, the Parador MaunaCaribe. Mr. López was president for the “Asociación de Dueños de Paradores” for two years consecutively creating the first amenities program for the Paradores. He was part of the Tourism Company Quality Committee for the implementation of the Star’s Category System for Puerto Rico and Member of the Board of Directors of the Tourism Company. Today, he is part of the Board of Directors of the Puerto Rico Hotel & Tourism Association and Director of the Small Inns in Puerto Rico. Mr. López has been recognized with some important awards: SME Top Management Award from the Asociación de Ejecutivos de Ventas y Mercadeo de Puerto Rico, in the Tourism Category and he was one of the “Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year” in the category of Real Estate, Hospitality & Construction. One of his Paradores – Costa del Mar was awarded by the Tourism Company with the Best Parador of Puerto Rico Award. Every year, the Puerto Rico Hotel & Tourism Association evaluates and recognizes hotels with green practices and efforts in sustainable tourism. For two years consecutively, 2008 & 2009, the Palmas de Lucía has been recognized as the Small Green Hotel of the Year in Puerto Rico.

Richard G Lubinski - Think Energy Management LLC

Richard G. Lubinski is President of Think Energy Management LLC, an internationally recognized energy consulting firm. He is also a Life Member of the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) and serves as the president of the Northern Ohio Chapter of AEE. He holds several international professional certifications including: Certified Energy Manager #5866, Certified Energy Auditor #18, Certified Demand Side Management Professional #493, Certified Sustainable Development Professional #18, Certified Energy Management Systems Contractor, Certified Business Energy Professional #46 and Certified U.S. Green Lights Survey Ally. Hector Macias has over 12 years of professional Manufacturing and EHS experience. Hector joined Pfizer in 1999 as Process Engineer for Arecibo, Puerto Rico Operations. In 2005, he was appointed as Manager, Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients. In 2007 Hector was appointed as Manager/Team Leader of EHS for Arecibo. On June 2007 Hector was appointed Manager, EHS Management Systems for Puerto Rico operations. In 2009, he was appointed to his current position of Manager/Team Leader of EHS for Vega Baja Site. Jan Maduro - Energy Affairs Administration

Jan Maduro is the Deputy Director of the Energy Affairs Administration. He is the former Deputy Director of the Solid Waste Management Authority. His main responsibility is to implement the energy policy in Puerto Rico. He is a lawyer in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and has recently been approved by the Certified Environmental Manager certification.

Joyce M. Martinez-Roldán - Roldán Consulting

Joyce M. Martínez-Roldán is the owner and founder of Roldán Consulting, a marketing research firm specialized in the hospitality industry. Mrs. Martínez-Roldán is a knowledgeable professional with more than 16 years of experience in the areas of strategic marketing, research analysis, business intelligence, and new market development in the hospitality industry. She specializes in key research and marketing projects such as economic impact studies, customer satisfaction surveys, ROI studies, data mining, industry trends, advisory boards, focus groups, and executive workshops. Mrs. Martínez-Roldán is currently the cultural advisor of DMAI (Destination Marketing Association International), located in Washington, D.C., where she also serves as an international instructor for the Sales and Marketing Academy program for the Caribbean and Mexico region. She has served as invited professor of George Washington University and is currently a marketing professor at the University of Puerto Rico, School of Business Administration. Mrs. Martínez-Roldán holds a bachelor’s degree in International Affairs with a minor in Anthropology from George Mason University, and a master’s degree in International Business and Commerce, also from George Mason University, in Fairfax, Virginia.

Nhan Nguyen - U.S. EPA Headquarters

Nhan T. Nguyen joined the Chemical Engineering Branch (CEB) of EPA in 1989, and was promoted to Branch Chief in 1997. He has performed or supported numerous risk assessments and pollution prevention activities of new and existing chemicals including perfluorinated chemicals, microorganisms and nano-materials. He is a strong advocate of green chemistry and green engineering and is the initiator and catalyst of green engineering efforts including the development of green engineering textbook and other educational materials for engineering curricula. Prior to joining EPA, Nhan worked for Monsanto and Vista Chemical as a process engineer, project engineer, and shift supervisor. He has worked in several manufacturing operations including chlorobenzenes, chlorinated disinfectants, and linear alkyl benzenes. Nhan has a Masters degree in Chemical Engineering from the Catholic University of America.

Pedro Nieves - PR Environmental Quality Board

Pedro J. Nieves Miranda is the Chairman of the Puerto Rico Environmental Quality Board. he is an EPA attorney and environmental scientist currently on detail at EQB. Prior to EQB he worked in the private practice, O'Neil and Borges, as an environmental attorney. He has 12 years of experience in the environmental field. He holds a Masters degree in Environmental Law and Public Policy from the Vermont Law School.

William Orthwein - Dept. of Energy

William Orthwein is a Certified Energy Manager for the US Department of Energy (US DOE). He has worked on energy, air pollution, and waste minimization issues for the past 31 years, mostly with the US DOE and US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA). He is currently with the Industrial Technologies Program at the US DOE.

Rafael Pagan - Puerto Rico Manufacturing Extension (PRiMEX)

Rafael Pagán graduated from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez Campus with a degree in Chemical Engineering (BSChE). He holds a Juris Doctor Degree from the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras Campus. Eng. Pagán has over 40 years of experience in the area of medical devices, environmental management, and materials testing. Eng. Pagán has held management positions related to quality control/quality assurance, manufacturing, and engineering. He has extensive knowledge in process engineering, injection molding, water purification, and Quality Management Systems (ISO 9001, ISO 13485 and AS 9100) implementation. Eng. Pagán is also qualified to train and implement all Lean Manufacturing Principles. He is a member of the College of Engineers and Surveyors, and the Puerto Rico Bar Association.

Kristin Pierre - U.S. EPA Headquarters

Kristin Pierre is the founder and manager of the US EPA's Green Supplier Network. Launched in 2003, the Green Supplier Network is a collaborative program between US EPA and the Department of Commerce, National Institute of Standards and Technology, Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP), that focuses on providing Lean and Clean technical assistance to the suppliers of large manufacturers. Ms. Pierre work at EPA has centered on the partnership of business and the environment. She was co-manager of US EPA's Environmental Accounting Project and supported the development of the United Nations Environmental Management Accounting workgroup. She has worked at the Michigan Environmental Council and Public Sector Strategies. Previously, she worked at McMurdo Station, Antarctica on recycling and waste management and at the Kathmandu Environmental Education Project in Nepal.

Eddie Ramirez - Caribe Hilton Hotel

Eddie Ramirez joined Hilton in 1991 as Food and Beverage Manager for the Caribe Hilton Hotel. He joined the hotel’s Green Team and began by implementing a paper and cardboard recycling program, social initiatives with the community, and a water conservation program. In 1995 the Puerto Rico Hotel & Tourism Association (PRHTA) established the Green Hotel Program and the hotel decided to participate for the distinction of Green Hotel of the Year by becoming the first hotel to win the prestigious recognition. The hotel’s program maintained its presence and growth in the coming years and in February 2008, Eddie Ramirez took on the responsibility of Environmental Sustainability Manager. Following the goals of the company, he set out to take the hotel to the top level of recognition, get the hotel certified and recognized by its accomplishment worldwide, and obtain “Green Globe Certification.” In 2009, Eddie renewed the certification and won the Green Hotel of the Year given by the PRHTA. The list of initiatives continued to grow and the hotel’s participation in various venues with volunteer support and sponsorship continues to have great presence. In January 2010, the hotel got its “Green Key Certification” the first Hilton hotel in the Americas and first hotel in Puerto Rico with two certifications. Today Caribe Hilton recycles over 15 different items, has adopted the Escambron Beach, helps with volunteers in maintaining the beach and surrounding areas, volunteers in mangrove planting, heads the water monitoring program for the area, sponsors a KID’S program and has an outstanding energy conservation program.

Antonio Rios - Autoridad de Desperdicios Solidos

Mr. Rios has over 25 years of experience in the environmental field. During the 80's he worked for the Department of Natural Resources as a Scientific Researcher. He was the Director of the Recycling Program at SWMA for 10 years. He is an active member of many non-profit organizations promoting recycling and zero-waste.

Jeffrey Sama - New York State Dept. of Environmental Conservation

Mr. Sama has over 30 years of experience in environmental management for state, county and town government. He has also worked in education and private consulting. His undergraduate degree is in biology from Hofstra University, his graduate work was at the Polytechnic University of New York in water supply and wastewater engineering and he completed post-graduate work at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government on strategic management of regulatory and enforcement agencies. He is currently Director of Environmental Permits and Pollution Prevention for DEC, was the first Chairman of the New York State Pollution Prevention and Compliance Assistance Council, is the current Chair of the New York State Green Hospitality and Tourism Partnership and serves on the Board of Directors for the Northeast Waste Management Officials Association (NEWMOA).

Carl Axel Soderberg - U.S. EPA Region 2 - Caribbean Environmental Protection Division

Mr. Soderberg has over 40 years of experience in the environmental protection field. He worked for 16 years at the Puerto Rico Environmental Quality Board (EQB). He was Director of the Water Quality Area for 8 years and Vice Chair for 4 years. In 1987, he was recruited by the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority to establish and implement the Industrial Pre-treatment Program. Since 1992, he has been Director of EPA in the Caribbean.

Jose Torres - Baxter

Mr. Torres has more than 16 years of experience in Environmental Management and Industry Engineering. He is a Chemical Engineer graduated from Magasvez Campus, and has a management degree in Engineering and Environmental Management. Currently, he is the Engineering Manager for Baxter Healthcare at Jayuya. Mr. Torres' environmental program has been awarded several times by PRMA and other agencies.

Ada Torres-Ramirez - BusinessWise / PRHTA

Ms. Torres has more than 20 years of experience in business development and product design within the financial industry. In 2005 shoe received a professional certification in environmental standards from EC3, both for eco-tourism and company operations. She went ahead and enrolled in the environmental laws and regulations program at UPR. She started BusinessWise to do consulting work for green businesses. She has been an adviser to the Puerto Rico Tourism Company, SWMA, developers, and the Manufacturing Association. She is the former Executive Director and founder of the Puerto Rico Energy Cluster and Chair of the PRHTA Conservation Committee.

Evet L. Vera, Chemical Engineer graduated from the University of Mayaguez who worked with the Federal Government for 13 years in various agencies, including the Department of Energy for 8 years as Project Engineer/Waste Management Program Manager. Has been dedicated to the Environmental field since 1991 and for the last 14 years has been the Environmental Manager for Baxter Healthcare of Puerto Rico in Aibonito. Evet is also the Alternate Radiation Safety Officer for Baxter.
