The Northeast Waste Management Officials’ Association (NEWMOA) and the Northeast Recycling Council (NERC) presented their recent projects focused on reducing wasted food. While the projects worked in rural and small town communities, the outreach materials developed and lessons learned apply everywhere.

The PPT Slides are available:

Athena Bradley, NERC

Jennifer Griffith presented NEWMOA’s Promoting Strategies to Keep Food Waste Out of Landfills project that worked with solid waste and regional planning districts in rural areas of Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. The NEWMOA project focused on outreach to residents to reduce the generation of wasted food and increase backyard composting, and on holding events to promote connections between farms, businesses, institutions, food pantries, community meal providers, gleaning groups, and other organizations to increase the recovery and donation of good food.

Athena Bradley presented NERC’s Implementing Food Waste, Organics, and Manure Management in Rural Maryland Communities project that worked in two rural counties in Maryland. The NERC project developed outreach materials, held training events, and provided technical assistance on a variety of food waste topics, including food waste reduction in schools, community composting, and incorporating food scraps in an anaerobic digestor.
