PFAS: Assessing Laboratory Data Quality Webinar

Thursday, April 4, 2019
1:30 PM

The Webinar included the following presentation:

Dr. Nancy Rothman, New Environmental Horizons
PFAS: Assessing Laboratory Data Quality [PDF]

The drinking water health advisories and standards for several poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are 70 parts per trillion and lower. Detection at such low levels presents many challenges in the field and in the laboratory and can lead to difficulties in data quality assessment and usability.

Nancy C. Rothman, Ph.D., CEO & Principal Scientist, New Environmental Horizons, Inc. presented Analytical Issues Affecting PFAS Data Quality. Building upon the “PFAS Sampling Challenges” presentation, the practical aspect of reviewing PFAS data for accuracy, precision, sensitivity, and representativeness will be discussed.  An example PFAS report was reviewed to demonstrate to users exactly what to look for when deciding if the data are able to be used for project decisions.  Specific issues, limitations, and interferences in PFAS data were addressed along with the key factors affecting analytical accuracy of PFAS compounds in various types of media. Issues related to comparison of data from one laboratory to another and from one sampling event to another were addressed so that data users can make informed decisions about their projects.
